英文口語贅字+容易誤解的英文俚語

This meaningful unit is intended to usher in an introduction of English superfluous words and phrases (pet phrases and fillers) which add nothing either to the meaning or to the color of a sentence and should be ruthlessly cut from our oral and written compositions. 　很多人都有口頭禪，像歐巴馬的“let me be clear”（讓我講清楚），雷根總統說話習慣前先來一個“Well”，然後半秒鐘停頓。
　小布希則愛說：Make no mistake about it（可別弄錯了！）讓人想起西部牛仔在說話。這些都慢慢形成一個人說話的風格。
　大部份口頭禪很短，是發語詞，像“um”, “er”, “ah”, 也有像“you know”、“like”這類字沒有意思，功能是讓語氣順暢，一氣呵成不中斷。
　美國年輕人用“like”這個字眼，經常已經到浮濫地步，有人覺得講話裡少了像“like”這樣的過渡字，就像赤裸裸站在別人面前，不自在（Your speech might feel “naked” without the word “like” to fill in gaps.）。但過度使用這些無意義的字，真的讓人反感。
　美國有一個機構叫Academy of Linguistic Awareness曾經發起一個“Don’t sound stupid, stop saying like”的運動。整天把like掛在嘴上，真像個白癡？Like的流行始於加州南部，後來遍及北美，年輕人用得太誇張了。
　

漫談荷馬(Homer’s Trojan War/Odyssey/Iliad)的神話西遊典故教學

I know that some of you have acquired some relevant Troy-oriented knowledge from your reference book/outside reading material entitled Reading Classic. Related Greek mythology allusions rendered are listed below:Odyssey, Scylla and Charybdis,between a rock and a hard place, Cassandra, and Achilles’ heel. These classical allusions are explicated in clearer details. Granted, there’re still some other allusions listed in the following without any explanation, but don’t worry because I’ll seize an opportunity to introduce them one by one at my earliest convenience.

【明報專訊】希臘的神話和文學作品蘊藏許多典故，荷馬史詩Odyssey（中譯《奧德賽》）的主角Odysseus（拉丁名為Ulysses），乃特洛伊戰爭中希臘聯軍的「諸葛亮」，木馬屠城的計謀就是由他想出來。不過，因為他得罪了海神，所以在凱旋返國途中遭遇海難，歷險10年才輾轉回到家裏。《奧德賽》敍述Odysseus漂流期間的旅程，所見所聞神奇如我國的《西遊記》，後來Odysseus或Ulysses就成為遊歷者的代名詞。

穿過校園的海報走廊，只見美腿林立。法律之夜的海報是一雙穿著絲襪與高跟鞋的美腿，裙擺以上不見。工科之夜是一雙穿紅色高跟鞋的美腿沿階梯走下，短裙以上不見；宣傳詞寫著「學長幫你寫功課」。是女同學只要長得好看，打扮漂亮來參加舞會，功課自然會有男學長代勞嗎？森林之夜則是穿高跟鞋的裸女剪影。這裡的女性身體，或者遭切割，或者缺少互動的主體。大學生尚且喜歡使用女體（部位）來進行宣傳，讓人不由想起為電玩打廣告、為職棒開球的瑤瑤。
When can we eliminate the notion of misogyny, the hatred or contempt of women and girls, embedded in our patriarchy? Ever since the age of Socrates, who maintained that the courage of a man was shown in commanding, while that of a woman was shown in obeying, misogyny has lingered long over how a man stereotypes or exercises violence against a woman. Perhaps, rarely do you witness the cases of misogyny in reality because the modern society, swayed by the concept of feminism and queer identity politics, is supposed to emphasize/assert gender equity instead of gender discrimination or bias. Nevertheless, misogyny is symbolically represented or semiotically constructed in this ambiguous patriarchal status quo, which accounts for why we’d better be more alert to or critical of basic concepts, history, industry, practices, and controversies surrounding our cultural texts or mass media.
