Of late, I’ve squeezed some time out of my tight schedule to indulge myself in reading the fifth episode of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” which has indeed catered to my taste so far. Much to your surprise, I haven’t watched the recently released cinematic adaptation grounded upon the first episode of the Olympian series because on occasion, compared with novels, the filmic adaptaions may not measure up to my highly demanding expectation. Hence, I high recommend that you’d better go buy or borrow these books and engross yourselves in them. I’m sure that when perusing them, you’d be not merely thrilled with and amused by the entertaining story plots but also swamped with the numerous allusions to Greek myths in them.

As follows are the synopses of the Olympian series. Hopefully, you’ll take delight in them.
The Lightning Thief
Percy Jackson is a twelve year old boy diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). After going on a field trip and being attacked by his math teacher, he finds out that he is the son of a Greek god. He is sent to Camp Half-Blood, a camp for children with a Greek god as a parent, located off Long Island. Not long after he arrives, Poseidon, the sea god, claims Percy as his son. Percy is accused of stealing Zeus’ thunderbolt. He is given ten days to return the thunderbolt to Mount Olympus in order to stop a war between the gods from starting, and save his mother, who has been held hostage in the Underworld.
The Sea of Monsters
In this book, the shortest novel of the series, Percy’s empathy link kicks in when he has a dream which is the reality of Grover the satyr, who has been kidnapped and taken to an island in the Sea of Monsters, a dangerous sea that is almost impossible to pass through getting out alive. Percy, Annabeth, and his new half-brother Tyson the cyclopes go and try to not only save Grover, but retrieve the Golden Fleece, the only thing that can stop Thalia’s Tree from dying and revealing Camp Half-Blood vulnerable to an attack by the Titans and other monsters.
The Titan’s Curse
Grover has gone undercover to a school in search for half-bloods, and finds two powerful siblings, Nico and Bianca di Angelo. While on this mission, they are attacked by a manticore, and then the Hunters of Artemis arrive just in time to help. Annabeth falls off a cliff in an attempt to kill the manticore, and Percy soon learns that somehow she survived and has been captured by Luke. Also, Bianca di Angelo has joined the Hunt and leaves Nico at camp. Soon after arriving at camp, Percy learns that Artemis herself has been captured too. Percy, Grover, Thalia, Bianca, and Zoë Nightshade (Artemis’ lieutenant) go on a quest to rescue them. They learn that Atlas has escaped his torment at the Mountain of Despair on California’s Mount Tamalpais, and is intent on stopping the heroes from success. They defeat him, but not before losing both Hunters in the quest. At the solstice, Thalia replaces Zoë as Artemis’ lieutenant. As soon as they return, Nico is told about Bianca’s death, and blames Percy. He runs away, and Percy realizes that Nico is a son of Hades. At first Percy, Annabeth, and Grover think that this goes against the promise of the Big Three, which is to never have demigod children, but then they remember that Bianca had told them that she and Nico were stuck in the Lotus Resort & Casino for possibly decades. Percy now has a new enemy in Nico, son of Hades.
The Battle of the Labyrinth
After being attacked by monster cheerleaders at his new school, Goode, Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood and learns about “The Labyrinth”, part of the palace of King Minos in Crete that, according to Greek mythology, was designed by Daedalus. During a game of capture the flag, Annabeth and Percy find an entrance into the Labyrinth. Percy soon learns that Luke had used the entrance and will lead his army through the Labyrinth straight into the heart of camp. To get into the Labyrinth, Percy has to find the Delta Symbol (Δ) on a passageway, touch it, and then enter the Labyrinth to find Daedalus
Using the Labyrinth, Percy tries to find Daedalus so Luke cannot get Ariadne’s string, thereby foiling Luke’s invasion. He gets the help he needs from a mortal girl named Rachel Elizabeth Dare, who proves herself by hitting Kronos in the eye with a blue plastic hairbrush. Kronos finds out that Nico di Angelo is a son of Hades and also could be the child of the prophecy. Luke reaches Daedalus and gets Adriadne’s string. Using the magical instrument, he leads his army and attacks camp. Grover comes to the rescue and causes a Panic to scare away the enemy. After the battle, Daedalus sacrifices himself to close the labyrinth, which is tied to his life.
The Last Olympian
Percy Jackson and his friends fight in a war resembling the original war between the Greek gods and the Titans and in a final battle with the powerful Titan, Lord Kronos. They ultimately defeat Kronos in the battle and Olympus is saved.
The gods grant Percy, Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson each a reward. Tyson becomes the General of the Cyclops army and the weapon they grant him of his own request is a “stick” (a.k.a. club). Grover receives a seat on the Council of Cloven Elders. Annabeth will be in charge of rebuilding Olympus. Percy is offered the granting of one wish as his reward, and he is told he can choose immortality. Instead, seeing all the damage done, Percy makes the gods promise on the River Styx that they will recognize all of their children by the time the children turn 13. He also asks them to build cabins for the minor gods like Hecate and Morpheus, which is at the request of another demigod, Ethan, who was killed during the battle, and whose mother is Nemesis, the goddess of revenge and balance.
Rachel becomes the Oracle of Delphi, and Percy and Annabeth share a kiss. Afterward, the other campers dunk them in the lake and Percy makes an air bubble, in which they share an underwater kiss. The story concludes when Annabeth and Percy race down the hill at Camp Half-Blood and for once, Percy does not look back.

Hey! Love the series. Finished it last year and I can’t wait for the grapic novel coming up. Try reading Riordan’s Kane Chronicals. The first book “The Red Pyramid” is so cool! Its about Egyptian Mythology, though in an interview, he says Percy and his friends are going to make an apperance as “minor characters”.

Duh! I know right? Soo many changing.. first, annabeth’s hair .. The vacation with his mom. The capture the flag.. the toilet.. the clarrise( clarrise isn’t in the movie of pj and the lightning thief.) The emporium .. SO MAAAAAAAAAANY CHAANGES!
八月 19, 2010 at 8:31 am |
I’m currently on the 2nd, and I’ve even recommended some juniors to read it! Some descriptions are so creative – “my mouth felt like a scorpion had been using it for a nest”. There are many funny twists and turns that add flavour to the book. However, when it comes to the joke that “Laistrygonians” are “Canadians”, well….. not humourous. I still enjoyed it anyway, taking them along with me to almost everywhere.
I’ll read your synopses later on, since I really take pleasure in guessing what will happen next. Lastly, I was thinking that if I understood Greek mythology thoroughly, I could’ve had a different view. (I did check out some of the myths online though)
八月 19, 2010 at 8:39 am |
P.S. I’m so thrilled that my mother bought me three of the books!!!! (the truth is that I’m totally obsessed with it)

I love the cool descriptions as well.that’s one reason why I like the series so much.

hahahaa, yes that’s my name. I’ve got the fourth one already, still missing the last. 14th…Seems that you’ve grasped the speedy reading strategy? BTW, are you British? Americans hardly type their words correctly (no offense)
八月 22, 2010 at 2:26 pm |
I’ve started “The Titan’s Curse” today, and the beginning about Apollo is so funny, like Thalia muttered “Apollo is hot.” and Percy replied: “He’s the sun god.” etc… I laughed in my room, and if I mom saw me, she’d frown and think that I’m nuts.
I guess reading quickly wouldn’t be a good choice- I ought to check out every depiction that I’m not familiar with. Well, why is this book categorized under children’s literature?
八月 22, 2010 at 3:15 pm |
Actually, the whole series are classified as one category of adolescent literary texts, which aim at assisting the teenagers worldwide in grasping the concept of adulthood, maturity, puberty and sexuality. These relevant novels aren’t considered children’s literary texts or kiddie’s literature any longer.
十月 26, 2010 at 4:32 pm
OK that’s weird!
二月 24, 2011 at 3:38 am
what are you talking about are you crazy they are for kids
二月 24, 2011 at 11:55 am
Glad you’re also an enthusiast of the Percy Jackson’s series, but please mind your manners. What’s more, it’s true that Percy Jackson’s can be categorized into young-adult fiction.
二月 24, 2011 at 3:37 am |
Thalia) Apollos hot. (percy) hes the sun god (thalia) thats not what i meant… lol that was really funny
四月 7, 2011 at 4:47 pm
In the Apollos’s car that turned into a something like bus( i imagined it like bus), right? XD
八月 23, 2010 at 4:26 am |
Oh, so it isn’t!! The series has been placed in the area of some kids stories at Eslite bookstore(Zhongchen), that’s why I got such an idea
九月 3, 2010 at 1:54 pm |
A week before school started, I finished “The Titan’s Curse”. From the three episodes so far, I think it’s the best. Do you have a preferred god? (Loivissa and I have also discussed this.)
Sorry if the following questions are silly:
As an English teacher, when you read these novels, do you read critically or in a casual way? I mean since we’ve learnt much on “critical thinking” are we supposed to utilize that when we read these extracurricular materials? What is your opinion concerning critical thinking?
What I have been doing is : to enjoy the reading as well as to take note of some of the issues, (though sometimes I’m so indulged that i didn’t pay much attention.)
九月 3, 2010 at 9:26 pm |
1. No, I don’t show preference for any Greek deity.
2. If I treat these material as those for pleasure, at times, I don’t care in the least. In converse, if I’m required to read them for critical analysis or investigation, perhaps I cannot be too careful during my reading process.
九月 25, 2010 at 4:15 pm |

DUDE PERCY JACKSON
<3 MOVIE N BOOKS
十一月 23, 2010 at 12:59 am |
I saw the movie first and didn’t care for it much, though, being the bookworm that I am, I decided to read the series.
These books are now near the top of my list for series that I love most.
I love these books, and I highly recommend them.
The movie is still entertaining nonetheless, but mostly because of Logan Lerman’s acting. He did a brilliant job as Percy Jackson and I can’t wait to see his future films.
十月 15, 2011 at 10:58 pm |
I agree about Logan’s acting but also, the book was SO much better than the movie(Probably because I read the book first and there wasn’t a lot of the info from the book in it.
I just started the Son of Neptune and I hope they start making movies for those books after the Percy Jackson series season their doing.
一月 31, 2011 at 7:23 am |
I love the books, the movie sucks and I want to read all the Rick Riordan books in the world! I’m a Book Bug!!
一月 31, 2011 at 7:25 am |
Couldn’t agree with you more!
二月 24, 2011 at 3:32 am |
The movie was awesome there making all the books movies… which there gonna fail because the guy who plays percy jackson is 19 which is good but the girl who plays annabeth is 24 and the guy who plays grover is 26…
十月 15, 2011 at 10:59 pm
I know the acter for Percy is 19, b ut the actors for Grover and Annabeth are NOT in there 20′s. (Are they?)
二月 24, 2011 at 3:29 am |
Just finished the battle of labryinth. Now gonna start the Last Olympian and i finsished the lost hero cant wait for the mson of neptune to come out.. !!!!!!
四月 7, 2011 at 4:41 pm |
lost hero? you mean Rick Riordan’s new book?
二月 24, 2011 at 3:33 am |
awesome
四月 7, 2011 at 4:33 pm |
Oh, I read the whole collection and it’s great. Hey, you forgot Grover about him .. becoming the LORD OF THE WILD.
四月 7, 2011 at 4:38 pm |
and .. THE MOVIE SUCKS! So much adding so much lessing. What the heck? They should make it more interesting like the book described. I only loved the movie because of Logan Lerman and Annabeth’s hair.. It should be blond. Oh damn, the book has more common sense, comedy ( I think that’s probably the same.) and .. interesting. If only the movie gave more effort like harry potter’s. But I love percy jackson for than harry potter, of course. Phew. I’m just addicted with percy jackson.
四月 7, 2011 at 4:40 pm
more than harry potter* -.-
十月 15, 2011 at 11:04 pm |
I agree that the movie sucked. They took out my favorite part where the chimera was going to eat Percy and he jumped of the building into the Mississippi river and had a chat with the spirit thingy. I LOVE the new series Rick’s making, The Lost Hero. I’ve already finished it and am reading the second book.
五月 20, 2011 at 11:02 pm |
I love the percy jackson series right now I’m reading The last olympian this is much better than the harry potter series but yah like i was saying i love it!!!!!

i love those books
八月 28, 2011 at 1:37 pm |
I loved this series! I read all five in five days, One each day. That was when I was in 5th grade, three years ago. As you can tell, I’m a bit reading obsessed. I finished The Lost Hero the day I got it, and am anxiously awaiting The Son of Neptune release on October 4th. I’m in the middle of a bunch of series, though, so it might have to wait a few days.
十月 13, 2011 at 12:07 am |
OMG this may be late but i love the percy jackson series soo much!!!!
i finished the son of neptune last night and it took me 5 hours to finish but i made it through! now i have to wait another year for the next book to come out! D: btw i finished the other series and the lost hero too! soo happy but so impatient for the next book! XD
十月 15, 2011 at 11:09 pm |
How can you read so fast!? Thats insane that you finished the book in 5 hours. I’ve been reading the book for 2 weeks but I can’t read that fast of course.
十月 15, 2011 at 10:52 pm |
I just got the Son of Neptune last week and there was only one left after being out for a week. The book is great but because of school, I have to read other books(AR reading for grammar class) so I haven’t gotten much reading in I’m afraid.
